PTSD Awareness Month: Healing Trauma at its Root

PTSD Awareness Month: Understanding Root Cause Healing

Just after Memorial Day, when we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, June arrives as PTSD Awareness Month. This is a crucial time to shed light on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the profound impact it has on millions worldwide. While we rightfully honor those who served our nations and are still fighting battles within, it is important to recognize that PTSD affects individuals from all walks of life. It manifests in many different forms—stemming from diverse experiences such as childhood adversity, personal loss, or systemic stress—and its impact is felt across every corner of society.

To better understand the complexities of PTSD and the potential for deep healing, here are some common questions regarding the nature of trauma and the modalities used to address it.

Why is conventional symptom management often not enough for PTSD?

Conventional approaches to PTSD frequently focus on managing symptoms like anxiety, flashbacks, or hypervigilance. While these strategies can provide temporary relief, they may not address the underlying emotional programming that fuels the disorder. True resolution often requires looking beyond the surface symptoms to the root causes embedded within the unconscious mind.

What role does the unconscious mind play in trauma?

The conscious mind is responsible for logical thought and daily functioning, but trauma often resides in the unconscious mind. This is where fear patterns, survival responses, and limiting beliefs are stored. Because the unconscious mind operates automatically, it can continue to replay traumatic patterns even when a person consciously desires peace and safety. Healing involves creating alignment between these two parts of the mind.

What are some alternative modalities for addressing PTSD?

Several specialized modalities focus on working directly with the unconscious mind to facilitate healing. These include:

• Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Hypnotherapy: These techniques help individuals reframe traumatic experiences and recondition negative emotional responses. NLP focuses on altering internal representations of events, while Hypnotherapy uses a relaxed state of focus to introduce positive changes at an unconscious level [1] [2].

• HUNA: This ancient Hawaiian framework emphasizes alignment and inner harmony. Principles like Ho’oponopono are used to release negative experiences and foster a sense of inner power and resilience. Dr. Matt James is a notable authority on how these ancient techniques can be applied to modern trauma recovery [3].

• Mental and Emotional Release® (MER®): Developed by Dr. Matt James, MER® is a clinically researched process designed to release unresolved emotional charges—such as anger, sadness, fear, and guilt—at their source. By targeting the emotional baggage associated with PTSD, it aims to facilitate significant personal transformation [4] [5].

Is it possible for healing to happen quickly?

A fundamental principle of these modalities is that if trauma can happen in an instant, the release of that trauma can also occur in an instant when the unconscious mind is engaged correctly. While the journey of recovery is unique for everyone, profound healing does not always require years of processing. Addressing the root cause directly can lead to rapid and lasting shifts in an individual's emotional state.

What is the ultimate goal of root cause healing?

The goal of addressing PTSD at its root is not just about survival or symptom suppression. It is about creating a harmonious alignment between the conscious and unconscious mind. This alignment empowers individuals to reclaim their lives, fostering greater freedom, clarity, peace, and purpose, and allowing them to move beyond the shadow of trauma.
